Frequently Asked Questions

While a remap will add a slight amount of extra strain to the vehicle, all our files stay well within the safe limits of the vehicle’s components, such as the engine and transmission/drivetrain. We only increase engine output to levels we consider safe, as pushing your vehicle beyond these limits wouldn’t benefit either of us.

It’s not in our interest to push your vehicle past its capabilities. Our business wouldn’t survive if we damaged cars regularly.

That said, it’s your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is in proper working order and has had parts replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations (e.g., changing spark plugs as needed).

Many of our customers claim their vehicle has a “full service history” when it might just have had an annual oil change. This does not meet the manufacturer’s servicing specifications.

One of the most common issues we encounter with petrol vehicles, though rare (about 1 in 500), is misfires caused by spark plugs reaching the end of their life after a tune.

In almost all cases, issues with a vehicle after a tune are due to component failures, not the tune itself.

Misfires due to faulty spark plugs or coil packs and boost leaks are the most common issues we see post-tune, typically resulting from poor maintenance.

There are a couple of ways a remap can be detected. The most cost-effective and commonly used method by manufacturers is to check the Calibration Verification Number (CVN) with diagnostic tools. If the ECU has a different CVN than expected, a manufacturer’s diagnostic tools will detect this.

A remap can also be identified through manipulation Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that appear in various car modules.

Some dealer tools can recognize that changes have been made to the original software, even if they don’t specify what changes were made.

With most modern vehicles, our industry-leading remapping software and tools can flash an ECU while keeping the original CVN intact and avoiding manipulation DTCs. This means that most dealer diagnostic tools will not detect the remap.

However, a remap is NEVER completely undetectable. If someone digs deep enough, they will eventually find it.

A practical solution for most situations is to return the vehicle to stock, which we can do for £60 including VAT.

Depending on the tuning method for your specific car, we can minimise the chances of it being detected.

If you’re after JUST a pop and bang or JUST an EGR solution, we do offer this at a slightly cheaper rate than we would if we were also tuning the vehicle.

A common question with many misconceptions. Ultimately, there is no such thing as a generic map. ‘Generic’ implies that any tune file could work on any vehicle, but every tune we apply is custom-calibrated for your vehicle’s make, model, drivetrain, ECU, and software version.

For stage 1 and most stage 2 files, we use dyno-tested, safe, and proven solutions without needing tweaks. This is because we know it’s a safe calibration that’s been developed on the dyno and on the road for an identical drivetrain.

At our Surreyshire branch, we offer calibrations for heavily modified vehicles using our rolling road.

There’s a misconception that an on-the-fly tune is safer and yields better results. This isn’t necessarily true. The quality of the tune depends on the tuner’s ability to work with a specific drivetrain and ECU combination.

No tuner writes completely custom software from scratch every time. Typically, they use a tried and tested solution or use it as a base, making minor tweaks if necessary. These adjustments are usually only required for heavily modified vehicles.

For heavily modified cars (e.g., with upgraded fueling or turbos), the tuner will start with a base map from a proven solution and then modify it to suit the specific modifications.

The important thing is not the ‘custom vs. generic’ argument but ensuring the tuner is reputable. Avoid companies that use clone tools (which can damage the ECU) and untested calibrations from unreliable sources.

To find a reliable tuner, check their reviews, digital presence, and pricing. If a remap costs only £150, the tuner might lack the funds for insurance or to fix any issues, indicating poor quality work.

TLDR;

There’s no such thing as a generic map. Don’t skimp on quality. Choose a tuning company based on reviews, reputation, and trust.

This is always a tough question. The reality is, modifying your vehicle will always affect a manufacturers’ warranty. Whether the manufacturer rejects a warranty claim is down to their discretion.

Bear in mind we can always flash your vehicle to stock for £60 including VAT.

We do not guarantee any fuel economy improvements due to external factors beyond our control.

While we can tune a vehicle to be more economical, factors such as low tire pressure, using different fuel, or driving more aggressively can negatively impact fuel economy.

Most of our customers report a slight improvement of 1 or 2 miles per gallon, or no change at all.

Some companies claim up to 20% guaranteed fuel economy savings, but this is unrealistic.

If your sole goal is to improve fuel economy without any interest in performance gains, tuning your car is not recommended.
